Welcome to "The Fearless Shopper". What's a fearless shopper? I am because I'm not afraid to rock a shirt I found at a clothing swap (yes, quality free stuff is within your reach; more on swaps later) with a purse from the Salvation Army, and a pair of boots from a consignment shop. Are you with me? To be a fearless shopper you can't be afraid to get your hands dirty, literally. Like buried treasure, I mine for shoes, clothing, jewelry and accessories at discount stores, 99 cent stores, thrift stores, flea markets, and consignment shops. I also know how to work a coupon for major department stores and retail websites. And through this blog I will give fellow frugal fashionistas the 411 on the best bargains in New York City and nationwide.

Ladies, run don't walk to a Payless near you. It's BOGO time -- buy one get another pair half off. In recent years, this discount retail chain has stepped up its shoe game by featuring designs by Patricia Field and Abaete.

I spend most of my Saturday or Sunday mornings riding the bus to Beacon's Closet, the notorious Brooklyn consignment shop where you can buy, sell, and trade for clothing and accessories. If you've been turned off by the sometimes snooty attitude of Beacon's buyers, don't let that stop you from getting your thrift on. After all, having Beacon's turn down the bags of what you thought were pretty cool clothes that you lugged from your not-so-close abode, is like a fearless shopper's right of passage. And the more you become familar with Beacon's style, the luckier you'll be. The store offers 55 percent in store credit or 35 percent in cash. My last trip, I happily went home with $65.
The Park Slope store (220 5th Ave.; 718-230-1630) has a reliable mix of contemporary pieces from H&M, Forever 21, and other fashionable outlets and one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.
The seriously hipster Williamsburg store (88 N. 11th St.; 718-486-0816) -- where I traded for my first and only Coach bag -- leans more towards quirky vintage and designer apparel.
